Softening Images Tutorial Intro

This tutorial will teach you how to make images softer and not so bright. It looks nicer on small graphics, like avatars and buttons; not so much on layouts in my opinion. You will get this as your final product:

Softening Images Tutorial

1. Open up Photoshop and your image. I'm going to be using an image of Kairi, Sora, and Riku sitting on a tree.

2. Unlock your image by double clicking it and pressing OK. Duplicate your image with Ctrl + J or Layer > Duplicate Layer. Ensure that this duplicated layer is on top of your original image. Apply Gaussian Blur with Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Set the the radius around 1-3px, depending on the size of your image. The larger it is, the higher the radius number.

3. Still on your duplicated layer, desaturate it with Image > Adjustments > Desaturate or Shift + Ctrl + U. Change the blending mode to Overlay.

4. Create a new layer with Layer > New Layer or Shift + Ctrl + L. Fill the whole layer with a dark blue. I used #050C37. Set the blending mode to Exclusion.

5. Create another new layer with Layer > New Layer or Shift + Ctrl + L. Fill the whole layer with a light blue. I used #BBCFEB. Set the blending mode to Soft Light, and lower the opacity to 80%.

6. Create one last new layer. Fill the whole layer with a light orange. I used #F4D9CC. Set the blending mode to Soft Light, and lower the opacity to 80% once more.

7. Now, your image should be softer, and depending on the colour of your image, a little darker. Decorate your image with brushes, templates, patterns, gradients, textures, whatever.
